Haderly Wins First of '04 at ABC!
By Nick Gima

July 10, 2004; Ashland, WI: - The kids took to the track for some bike-racing action, and Larry Haderly became the sixth different WISSOTA street stock feature winner in as many shows at the ABC Raceway Saturday night, as 113 entries crowded the pits for a program sponsored by County Market of Ashland.

In a non-stop contest on a smooth, fast track, Haderly bolted from the pole and led every lap, although not without challenge, as Randy Vezina, Roger Walker and Marshall Andrews provided close pursuit. The lead pair
gained a little ground by mid-race, and when Vezina blew a tire with six laps remaining Haderly held a half-straightaway lead to the finish and strengthened his points advantage. Andrews took second by a fender over Walker, while Steve Anderson and Lou Andrews trailed at a distance.

The other four divisions all saw repeat winners for the first time this season. For Dean Yrjanainen, his second straight win in the WISSOTA modifieds was the 56th of his career here, moving into sole posession of second place on the track's all-time list. Yrjanainen, who started outside on row 4, made significant gains on the outer groove and found himself second for a lap 9 restart behind racelong leader Darrell Carlson. A lap later Yrjanainen gained control of the race and tried to run off and hide, but Jeff Spacek, who started 16th on the 19-car grid after his crew made repairs to significant damage his car received in his heat, annexed second by lap 13 and used a lap 17 restart to challenge. Yrjanainen held on for the win with Spacek trailing close, while Clint Larson, Rick Przybylski and Bob Root completed a tight top five.

The win, combined with Al Uotinen's tenth-place run, drew Yrjanainen to within three of Uotinen's points lead.

Darin Meierotto also made it two in a row in WISSOTA super stock feature action, and like Yrjanainen, he came from an eighth-place start and used the upper lanes to do so. A thrilling five-car battle saw a handful of lead changes between Scott Lawrence and John Copp, while Randy Spacek and Meierotto tussled with a stubborn Ron Hmielewski for third. But on a lap 7 restart Lawrence bobbled and clogged up the field for just a moment, and Meierotto used a brilliant move to shoot through a gap and pull away with the lead. An eight-car melee with six laps to go drew the field back to the leader, and Greg Kuklinski provided heavy pressure for the lead, but Meierotto survived it for the win. After Kuklinski was penalized for jumping two restarts, Spacek was moved up to second at the pay window, followed by points leader Lawrence, Hmielewski and Copp.

Ken Tyykila collected his second six-cylinder feature win in three weeks after holding off second-finishing Steve Stuart's steady threats through several caution periods. After early top-three challenger Brent Brevak's motor blew, Greg Jaeger moved around Steve Tesch into third and threatened to do likewise to the leaders after a lap 12 restart but settled for third,
while Dale Coddington also got by Tesch late in the run for fourth.      Ron Swanson and Russ Weber both struggled through the evening's action, and with his runner-up effort Stuart becomes the new points leader by two ahead of Swanson.

Al Rapp also collected his second win of the year in pure stock feature action. After an initial yellow flag on the start, the 12-lapper ran straight through to the checkers, with Rapp taking the point from early leader Mike McKay on lap 2. Rapp distanced himself easily from the field until Cory Casari broke out of the logjam into second, and over the final three laps nearly caught Rapp, finishing on the winner's bumper while solidifying his points lead. Kevin Dudley gave his car its best run of the season with a strong third-place showing, fending off Tim Carlson, while the red-hot Kevin Truchon crossed the stripe sixth.

In kids' bike race action, winners included Matthew Clemens (ages 2-4), Bradley Duhr (5-7), Tanner Hicks (8-10) and Mitch Kieber (11-13). Winners in the bike giveaways were Cody Weiner, Rachael Bruch, Joshua Siebert, Brooke Beede and Savannah Swanson.

Next Saturday night the Raceway will host its first-ever Pure Stock Special, with a purse that has grown in recent days to over $2,000 and pays the winner $400. The other four divisions will also be in action, and there will be no increase in admission fees.

The ABC Raceway is located three miles south of Ashland on Highway 13, then one mile west on Butterworth Road. Hot laps are at 6:15 and racing starts at 7 pm. "Racenight Live" will air from 4:30-5:30 pm on WJJH, 96.7 &
