Casari Awarded Win in ABC Pure Stock Special! By Nick Gima
July 17, 2004; Ashland, WI: - A season-high 133 cars took to the ABC Raceway Saturday night, including
a track-record 33 representing four tracks for the Raceway's first-ever Pure Stock Special.
The 20-lap headliner eventually turned into a two-car shootout, but it was not without drama or controversy.
A strong-running Kevin Truchon led big early, despite fending off stiff challenges from Al Rapp after a couple of first-half
restarts. Meanwhile, Cory Casari worked from his sixth-row start through heavy traffic into the top five by lap 6 and used
the outer lane to sweep around Jim Eliason for third on lap 8 and Rapp on lap 9, just before the raceıs final slowdown. From
there Truchon and Casari pulled away from the field to decide the win, several times running side by side, until they caught
lapped traffic, where Truchon gained the advantage and crossed the finish line first.
However, Truchon's car was deemed illegal after a post-race technical inspection, handing the $500 win to Casari. Eliason
was moved to second at the pay window, 16th-staring Dave Soltau took third, Rapp ended up fourth and Glenn Dammer was moved
up to fifth. The total purse reached nearly $2,400 after many contributions from businesses, race teams and fans. Dale Coddington
was dominant in the six-cylinder feature and scored his first-ever career win. Coddington took the lead from Ron Swanson two
laps in and never looked back to cap off a night that also saw him win his heat. Swanson fought a bad push throughout the
event, allowing Dan Mihalek to take over second and run very strong, only to have his carıs motor fail him in the final half-lap
and drop him out of the top ten at the end. Swanson finished a distant second, followed by Russ Weber, Steve Tesch and rookie
Shawn McFadden, Jr.
The super stock feature ended in a photo finish, as division points leader Scott Lawrence nipped visitor Cory Davis by
less than half a foot at the checkered flag. Polesitter Darin Meierotto looked to walk off with his third straight win until
a rear-end failure forced him from contention, and from there the race became a three-car battle as Lawrence held off Davis
and Randy Spacek. Davis used the outer groove to pass Lawrence just before a lap 15 caution, and then Lawrence was collected
by Greg Kuklinski, but in the two-lap race to the win Lawrence came out of the final corner with some extra bite on the inside
line and drag-raced Davis to the line and edged him for the win. Spacek was a close third, followed by a great run from 20th-starter
Patrick Hoffman and Shawn McFadden.
Jeff Spacek improved on his past three weeks' finishes with his first win of the season in the modified A-main. Spacek
had finished runner-up in each of the last three mod mains, but this time he overtook polesitter Darrell Carlson after the
race's lone caution on lap 1 and ran away to a decisive win. Bill Byholm climbed through the field to finish second, while
Jerry Hartman nearly nipped him at the line. Dean Yrjanainen and Rick Przybylski completed the top five.
Larry Haderly became the street stock division's first repeat winner after claiming his second straight victory Saturday
night. Haderly took the lead from Shane Kisling on lap 6 and held off the visiting hotshoe from there to strengthen his hold
on that divisionıs points lead. Joe Rhead, fresh off his first career win in Menomonie Friday, ran a strong third, ahead of
Tim Baum and Trevor Wilson.
On Saturday, July 24, the Northern State Bank of Ashland and its area branch offices will host action in all five divisions.
The ABC Raceway is located three miles south of Ashland on Highway 13, then one mile west on Butterworth Road. Hot laps are
at 6:15 and racing starts at 7 pm. "Racenight Live" will air from 4:30-5:30 pm on WJJH, 96.7 & 102.3 FM, with track news
