Repeat Winners Abound in ABC Program! By
Nick Gima |
July 31, 2004; Ashland, WI: - All five features were won by previous winners in 2004 as the ABC Raceway
closed the month of July with 117 cars in the pits and a complete five-division program.
Dramatic twists in the points chases were also in abundance, especially in the modified division, where Dean
Yrjanainen entered the program with a one-point lead but gave up that lead to Al Uotinen after damage received in
his heat.
Uotinen took advantage of the opportunity by reeling in early leader Chris Oertel and sweeping by for his second feature win
of the season. Jeff Spacek also got by Oertel late for his sixth straight top-three finish, and behind Oertel in the non-stop
20-lapper were Darrell Carlson and Scott Hudack. Yrjanainen started dead last on the 19-car grid but finished
seventh.
Darin Meierotto again dominated super stock feature action for his third win of 2004, but he had to
patiently wait through six restarts - three of those while attempting to complete lap 14 - then fend off a surprise attack
by Charlie Anderson on the last restart and outrun Ken Truscott over the final seven laps. In the event points leader Scott
Lawrence presumably experienced handling problems while running mid-pack and caused a yellow-flag slowdown when his car climbed
over the hood of Rob Erickson's; neither car returned, and sixth-finishing John Copp closed the gap on the points leader significantly.
Anderson completed his strong run in third, Mike Duhr was impressive in fourth, and Uotinen filled out the top five.
There was no mystery over the outcome of the street stock main, where Trevor Wilson shot away from the
pole and ran off to his second win of the season. Three caution flags kept the field relatively close, but Wilson's only true
threat throughout was Tim Baum, who finished a strong but distant second. Roger Walker fought his way through traffic into
third by the final stripe, and Marshall Andrews and points leader Larry Haderly were also in the top five at the pay window.
The six-cylinder feature was also without yellow flags, but it was not without a little drama. Cory
Karshbaum, substitute-driving for Jim Maki, took Maki's car into the lead early but spent the entire 15 laps holding off challenges
from Russ Weber and a surprisingly strong Steve Tesch. Weber eventually cleared Karshbaum and pulled away to his second 2004
feature checkered; Karshbaum's car was later deemed illegal in a post-race inspection. Steve Stuart shook off his recent slump
with a strong run just ahead of Tesch, in what turned out to be second- and third-place finishes, while Chuck Hawkinson and
Ken Tyykila completed the top five. The top two in points - Ron Swanson and Dale Coddington - finished seventh and eighth,
respectively.
Cory Casari stole the lead away from Kevin Truchon just after the halfway point of the pure stock feature,
then worked through lapped traffic to his track-leading fourth checkered flag, strengthening his points lead. The lead duo
were far ahead of third-place Al Rapp at the final stripe, while Rapp held off visiting Miles Weske and Ricky Davis.
On Friday, threatening skies finally opened up just moments before hot laps were about to start, ruining
a perfectly-groomed race track and washing out the 17th annual Chuck Anderson Race of Champions. The event was to
feature
late models as part of the 2004 AmsOil Series, as well as super stocks and six-cylinders.
This Saturday, local radio stations WBSZ, WJJH and WNXR will present the racing action. Hot laps start
at 6:15 pm, and green-flag action begins at 7. The ABC Raceway is located three miles south of Ashland on Highway 13, then
one mile west on Butterworth Road. ³Racenight Live² will air from 4:30-5:30 pm on WJJH, 96.7 & 102.3 FM, with track news
