Meierotto, Wilson Double Up at ABC!
By Nick Gima

August 14, 2004; Ashland, WI: -  Darin Meierotto and Trevor Wilson backed up feature wins two weeks ago with repeat performances, while the ABC Raceway also welcomed the ladies onto the track to compete Saturday night. Meierotto moved steadily by early leader Ron Hmielewski to take the point on lap 9, then pulled away for an apparent easy win in the WISSOTA super stock feature. But spins slowed three attempts to complete lap 18 of the 20 scheduled, keeping those in position to challenge Meierotto close. Meierotto did survive the final two laps, while Hmielewski edged Greg Kuklinski at the line for second and Randy Spacek just got by Charlie Anderson for fourth. Points leader Scott Lawrence lost more of his healthy advantage with his second straight DNF and 21st-place finish, but still leads Kuklinski by 32.

Wilson's WISSOTA street stock feature win was much easier, despite five caution slowdowns scattered throughout the 15 laps; Wilson simply pulled away from runner-up Tim Baum on each restart. The scariest moment of the
night came on lap 7, when Dennis Groom made contact with a couple of other cars and then was turned into the back straight guardrail, which he hit head-on very hard. Groom exited the car under his own power, and the field sat under a red flag while track crews repaired the damage to the guardrail, which included a broken support post. Wilson led the rest of way to his third win of the year ahead of Baum, points leader Larry Haderly, Marshall Andrews and Roger Walker.

Steve Stuart returned to victory lane with his first six-cylinder feature win since opening night, and he did so in dramatic fashion.Shadowing points and race leader Ron Swanson through the first 13 laps as the two pulled away from the field, Stuart pulled to the outside on Swanson to challenge. But with two laps to go Swanson slipped up in turn 2, opening a gap low which Stuart dove into and used to pull by for the lead and eventual close win. Chuck Hawkinson used the outside to climb from row 5 to third, passing Greg Jaeger late for the spot. Ken Tyykila completed the top five.

Dean Yrjanainen and Al Uotinen continued their friendly rivalry for WISSOTA modified supremacy Saturday night; this time Yrjanainen prevailed in a runaway win - his fourth of the year - but Uotinen still leads the points picture after a solid second-place finish. After third-in-points Jeff Spacek spun himself out of a top-four run, visitor Paul Knauf moved up to claim third, while Darrell Carlson charged through to finish fourth ahead of Jerry Hartman.

Kevin Truchon overcame his mid-season adversity by dominating for his third pure stock feature win this season, pulling away early and staying in front of Ricky Davis. Clay Passuello and Bruce Kalmon enjoyed strong top-five runs ahead of Al Rapp. Cory Casari struggled in his heat and feature but still maintains his points lead.

Jeran Raivala, in Wilsonıs street stock, and Terrie Stuart, in her son Steve's six-cylinder, gave their cars double wins on the night in powder puff action, while Laura Lee Janzig put Kalmonıs pure stock out front to stay in that ladies' race.

On Saturday night action continues with Extreme Graphics Night. Hot laps are at 6:15 pm, with green-flag action beginning at 7. On Tuesday, August 24, the Raceway will host the rescheduled fourth leg of the six-race AmsOil Late Model Series, highlighted by a $2,000-to-win, $200-to-start feature. WISSOTA super stocks will also be on the card, running for $700 to win, with hot laps at 6:30 pm and racing at 7pm.

The ABC Raceway is located three miles south of Ashland on Highway 13, then one mile west on Butterworth Road. "Racenight Live" will air from 4:30-5:30 pm on WJJH, 96.7 & 102.3 FM, with track news and weather updates.
