Hartman, Spacek, Haderly, Weber Grab ABC Feature Checkereds! By Nick Gima |
August 21, 2004; Ashland, WI: - Three drivers returned to the ABC Raceway's winner's circle Saturday
night, while another edged closer to a points championship, and weather played a part as well.
Larry Haderly completed a sweep of street stock action by winning his heat and his third feature of the season in commanding
fashion. Haderly pulled away from his pole position start and Trevor Wilson and Tim Baum in the non-stop 15-lapper to extend
his points lead over Marshall Andrews to 36 with one night remaining. Baum slipped by Wilson in the late stages for runner-up
honors, as did Dennis Groom for third and Steve Anderson for fourth.
Randy Spacek survived an early tussle with Darin Meierotto and then held off a strong Ken Truscott for his second super
stock feature victory of '04.
In the caution-plagued 20-lapper Meierotto challenged Spacek for the lead several times, and on lap 12 snuck inside on
Spacek going into turn 1, but the two made contact and Spacek spun. With Meierotto sent to the back of the pack for the incident
Spacek then had to outrun Truscott the remainder of the way. Rick Rivord finished a solid third.
Early in the event Greg Kuklinski's car broke, and on lap 11 John Copp tangled with Jeff Lindsey, putting Copp into the
front chute concrete hard nose-first. Their hard luck, combined with Spacek's win and Shawn McFadden's fourth-place run, knocked
Kuklinski and Copp to fourth and fifth, respectively, in the super stock points battle. Spacek moved into the runner-up
spot in the standings, 43 behind leader Scott Lawrence, who took fifth in Saturday's A-main, while McFadden moves to third
in points, eight behind Spacek and one ahead of Kuklinski, with two shows remaining.
Russ Weber started from the pole and led every lap, despite steady pressure from a strong-running Pat Cook, for his third
six-cylinder feature win of the season. Weber and Cook ran one-two throughout the 15-lap run, while Jim Anderson switched
off between challenging Cook for second and fighting back a determined Steve Stuart before settling for third place. Points
leader Ron Swanson claimed fifth, and extended his points lead to 28 over new second-in-line Weber. Dale Coddington dropped
from second to seventh in points after troubles in his heat led to a non-start in the semi-feature, while Stuart took over
third. Only 11 points separate second through fifth in the sixes with one race remaining.
Jerry Hartman was the only feature winner tonight that did not start on the pole, as he came from ron 2 to win the modified
A-main. Hartman took the lead after a heated battle with Al Uotinen on lap 2 and extended that lead after a lap 5 restart
before heavy rains swooped in and washed out the balance of the race on lap 14. It was Hartman's second win this season and
30th of his career here. Uotinen held on to second and pushed his points lead out to 25 over Dean Yrjanainen, who started
17th in the 19-car field but flew to a fifth-place finish. Scott Hudackıs nice run netted him third at the pay window, ahead
of Bob Root.
The pure stock feature will be made up during the season finale on August 28. After heat action Cory Casari holds a 21-point
advantage over Al Rapp.
On Tuesday night the speedway will host the rescheduled fourth leg of the AmsOil Late Model Series, with super stocks as
the companion division. Hot laps are at 6:30 pm, with green-flag action beginning at 7. The ABC Raceway is located three miles
south of Ashland on Highway 13, then one mile west on Butterworth Road. For more information, visit the track website at <www.abcraceway.com>
